Sydney Metro has created a new chief information officer (CIO) position to oversee its digitalization, IT strategy, and delivery. The role was designed to manage the technological components of Sydney Metro’s digital railway infrastructure as the autonomous railway operator continues to build out all the network. A search for an executive capable of overseeing the delivery and program management of multiple businesses’ IT solutions and platforms began late last month.
The CIO will also oversee an ongoing digitalization that includes enhancements to travel applications, timetable information, and access to alternate public transportation information.
“A chief information officer (CIO) job has been formed at Sydney Metro as development on Australia’s largest public transportation project continues,” stated a spokeswoman. “In order to support the project’s scope, this new function will offer a number of continuing initiatives and services to Sydney Metro.” “The post works with Sydney Metro as well as the larger Transport for NSW IT leadership group.”
While a permanent CIO is sought, Sydney Metro’s director of information technology, James Carter, functions as interim CIO.
The new CIO will answer to Johanna Hall, executive director of corporate services, once hired. Sydney Metro is also hiring for various IT positions as it expands its staff to meet its strategic goals. When finished, the Sydney Metro will include 31 metro stations and over 66 kilometers of new rail. The agency intends to expand the network to 46 stations and more than 113 kilometers of rail by 2030.
