Super Retail Group has enlisted Optus to implement 5G fixed wireless access as a backup connectivity solution at its Queensland distribution centre.
Ray Birt, the General Manager for Cyber, Networks, Infrastructure, and Service Management at Super Retail Group, stated that the distribution centre typically relies on diverse terrestrial fibre routes for connectivity.
To enhance reliability, 5G fixed wireless has been introduced as a backup option, enabling seamless operations at the site. Birt confirmed extensive testing of the 5G solution, with Super Retail Group operating the distribution centre primarily on Optus‘ 5G network for an entire day.
The speeds ranged from 20Mbps to 325Mbps, providing support for both IT and OT workloads at the location.During an Optus Tech Day conference, Birt expressed confidence in the 24/7 coverage and resilience of the 5G connectivity at the distribution centre.
Super Retail Group manages several distribution centres across the country, with the Queensland-based facility serving as the primary location for physical stores and online order fulfillment.
While other centres rely on 4G for backup, Birt revealed that it proved inadequate as bandwidth thresholds were quickly reached during operations.
Super Retail Group is known for its brands, including Supercheap Auto, Rebel, BCF, and Macpac.
Birt emphasized the importance of establishing reliable network connectivity, considering it a critical aspect of the company’s customer service and growth strategies.
The company’s technology roadmaps also explore future applications of emerging AI technologies.
