Starlink provides internet access to Nambucca Heads for the railway station’s wi-fi

Transport for NSW is currently conducting a trial of complimentary Wi-Fi services at Nambucca Heads station, utilizing Starlink’s low earth orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver internet connectivity. This decision was motivated by the station’s location within an area with limited cellular coverage.

The provided Wi-Fi service offers a daily usage limit of 60 minutes per user. Initial feedback from railway users has been positive, providing valuable insights into usage patterns that will guide future enhancements and adjustments to improve passenger service offerings. Vernon Buckle, Customer Environment Manager at NSW TrainLink, emphasized the significance of this feedback.

Considering the potentially extended gaps between connections in regional areas, ensuring a positive passenger experience is of utmost importance. Robert Bainton, Infrastructure and Integration Manager at Transport for NSW, highlighted the role of reliable digital connectivity in achieving this objective. The trial is being conducted as a proof-of-concept and holds the potential for broader applications across the network.

The collaboration between the NSW Telco Authority and Transport for NSW has facilitated this three-month trial. The NSW Telco Authority has been exploring the feasibility of LEO satellite services since August 2022, considering them as a possible extension to their P25 trunked radio technology within their next-generation digital connectivity project.

Throughout the trial period, Transport for NSW will actively monitor the service, promptly addressing any technical or performance-related challenges that may arise.
