South Australia Expands “Words Grow Minds” Initiative for Early Childhood Development

Following the recent Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care led by Julia Gillard, South Australia is set to broaden the “Words Grow Minds” initiative, aimed at supporting early childhood development.

Extensive research emphasizes the significance of a child’s first 1000 days for their social and emotional intelligence. “Words Grow Minds” strives to provide parents with essential guidance during this critical period.

Encouraging Parent-Child Interaction

The pilot campaign of “Words Grow Minds” kicked off in November 2022 in Mount Gambier and later in Whyalla in February 2023. It ingeniously combines advertising, social media, and collaboration with various service providers to reinforce consistent messages to parents.

The initiative equips parents and caregivers with tools, advice, and resources to enhance interactions with their infants through talking, reading, singing, and playing. Research underscores that such interactions significantly impact brain development.

Ongoing Commitment to Literacy

The South Australian government is pledging nearly $1 million to Raising Literacy Australia (RLA) for the continued production and distribution of book packs for newborns. This initiative will provide 21,000 “baby book packs” to support early numeracy and literacy development.

In addition to the above, an additional $600,000 will be allocated to deliver over 23,000 preschool book packs to families across the state. These efforts aim to bolster foundational literacy skills from an early age.

Ambitious Goals for Childhood Development

The Malinauskas Government is taking swift action by adopting the Royal Commission’s initial recommendation to reduce the rate of South Australian children entering school developmentally vulnerable. Their target is to lower this rate from 23.8% to 15% within two decades, surpassing the national average.

Furthermore, the State Government has earmarked $70 million to initiate the implementation of 12 recommendations, including the rollout of universal three-year-old preschool programs, set to commence in 2026. These investments are poised to transform early childhood education in South Australia.
