Since its inception, Sony has been a driving force in the video game industry. With popular consoles like the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, Sony has cemented itself as a top player in the console market. In recent years, Sony has released the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and 5, which have been extremely successful. Now, it looks like Sony is planning to release a new PlayStation VR headset.
According to people familiar with the matter, Sony is planning to make 2 million units of its new PlayStation VR2 headset by March 2023. The new headset is said to be more powerful than the current model and will offer a better gaming experience. Sony is reportedly aiming to release the new headset in time for the holiday season.
The new headset is also said to be lighter and more comfortable to wear than the original, and will feature improved tracking and a wider field of view.
The PSVR, Sony’s previous virtual reality technology, only sold a million units in its first eight months, compared to the Quest 2 from Meta, which sold nearly 3 million units in its first quarter.
The public’s reaction to VR technology has been slow. While the PSVR wasn’t a grand slam, it still offered a low-cost entry point into VR, while allowing for top-rated games to be played, such as Resident Evil 7 and Beat Saber, on the PS4.
Sony has not yet announced the price or release date for the PSVR2. The date listed above for March 2023 coincides with Sony’s belief that there will be fewer supply chain bottlenecks, making the PlayStation 5 more available as well.
