According to BBC reports, some virtual reality apps allow kids into virtual strip clubs. These apps are ‘’ dangerous by design’’. BBC News investigation showed a 13-year-old girl witnessing sexual material, rap threats and insulting comments in the virtual reality world.
Following the investigation, the children’s charity was shocked and angry at the findings. Andy Burrows, head of online child safety policy says that the investigation had found ‘’ a toxic combination of risks.’’
Metaverse from game to work
Previously, virtual reality was more about playing games and experiencing all of it through virtual reality headsets. However, with technological progress, it is now adopted for work, concerts, visiting parks and cinemas.
Metaverse owner Zuckerberg thinks it’s the future of the internet. He invested millions of dollars to rebrand Facebook with Meta. The company is also investing in the development of the Oculus Quest Headset.
Meanwhile, a BBC news researcher showed a 13-year-old visiting a virtual reality room. She told the researchers that the avatar in the virtual reality ‘’ gets naked and does unspeakable things.’’ Furthermore, she also experienced them talking about ‘’ erotic role-play.’’
Mr. Burrows from NSPCC says, ‘’ its children being exposed to entirely inappropriate, really incredibly harmful experience. ‘’ He further added, ‘’ this is a product that is dangerous by design, because of oversight and neglect. We are seeing products rolled out without any suggestion that safety has been considered.’’
13-year-old girl’s experience with VRChat
The girl shared her VRChat experience with a BBC researcher and told that she was surprised. Though, she started as a child again, as grown men asked her why she wants to school, and then encouraged her to engage in VR sex acts. She said, ‘’ it felt all more disturbing.’’
It felt like more an adult’s playground than a child’s. She said everything about the room felt unnerving. It’s very uncomfortable, and your options are to stay and watch and move to another room.
Even people who observe developments in VR are showing concerns. Catherine Allen runs a consultancy Limina Immersive says, ‘’ she sounds many of the experiences in VR fun and surreal, but others have been quite traumatic and disturbing. ‘’
She believes either there is no moderation in the games or very little moderation. Meanwhile, VRChat says it’s ‘’working hard to make itself a safe and welcoming place for everyone.’’
