Melbourne-born singer and vocalist Judith Durham dies at age 79. The Australian singer rocketed to international fame with hits including A World of our own, The Carnival is over and Geography Girl. She also released several solo albums but was best known as the voice of folk music group the Seekers.
Tony Burke, Australia’s federal minister for the arts reacted to the news on social media, and pay tribute saying ‘’ an icon of our music’’.
He wrote ‘’Once, the best known Australian voice was Judith Durham’s. What a contribution. What a loss.’’
Medal of the Order of Australia
During her career, Durham received several awards including the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for music services. She was particularly recognised as an entertainer and composer. She also won Centenary Medal in 2003. In 2015, she was named Victorian of the year.
She started her music career at the age of 19. She was born in Melbourne. The singer recorded her first EP along with Athol Guy, Bruce Woodley, and Keith Potger.
Durham Married life
She married British Pianist and musical director Ron Edgeworth in 1969. In 1990, the couple survived a car crash with the tour manager. However, Durham sustain injuries including a fractured leg and wrist.
In 2013, Durham suffered a stroke that impacted her ability to read and write. However, it didn’t affect her singing. In 2018, her last album was released to celebrate her 75th birthday. Her husband died of neuron disease. She also recorded multiple albums including Mona Lisas and Let Me Find Love until 2013 when she released her final LP, its Christmas Time. She always enjoys the record-breaking international success. Though she parted ways with The Seekers to pursue her solo career. And join again later for performance.
