Sheryl Sandberg announced to step down as Facebook Chief Operating Officer

The Chief operating officer of Facebook’s parent company Meta, Sheryl Sandberg has announced to leaving Facebook. She is one of the most high-profile tech women in the tech industry. Sheryl is leaving Facebook after 14 years of being in service. She announced her departure in a Facebook post saying she hoped to focus on her foundation and philanthropic work.

Her Departure comes as Meta faces tough Competition

Currently, Facebook is facing tough competition from competitors such as TikTok and also a slowdown in advertising sales. She is leaving Facebook at tough times. The woman known as the powerful second in command said in her post,’’ When I took this job in 2008, I hoped I would be in this role for five years. Fourteen years later, it is time for me to write the next chapter of my life.’’

Meanwhile, in an interview she told Fortune, ‘’ this is a really important moment for women. This is a really important moment for me to be able to do more with my philanthropy, with my foundation.’’

Indeed, she help grow the annual revenue of Facebook from $272 million in 2008 to $118 billion last year. She owns a net worth of $ 1.6 billion as a leading cooperate executive.

Who will be the next Chief operating officer of Meta Company?

Javier Olivan will replace Sheryl Sandberg as Meta’s Chief operating officer. He was born in 1977 in Sabinanigo in the northern eastern Spanish region of Aragon. He is an Oxford graduate and join Facebook in 2007 as the head of international growth. 

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg shared a note announcing Sandberg’s departure and said, ‘’ I don’t plan to replace Sheryl’s role in our existing structure. I am not sure that would be possible since she’s a superstar who defined the COO role in her unique way.’’

He added, ‘’Javi’’ would become the next COO, but this role will be different from what Sheryl has done. It will be a more traditional COO role where Javi will focus internally and operationally, building on his strong track record of making our execution more efficient and rigorous.” Olivan supported Zuckerberg in his post. He wrote,

“Sheryl has been a remarkable advocate for Meta and has worked with partners and helped to tell our story to external audiences for years. With some exceptions, I don’t anticipate my role will have the same public-facing aspect, given that we have other leaders at Meta who are already responsible for that work.”
