Services Australia Workers Plan 24-Hour Strike
Services Australia employees are set to engage in a 24-hour strike on Monday, October 9, over a pay dispute. This industrial action may have repercussions on several government services, including Centrelink and health insurance, which could lead to disruptions for welfare recipients.
Government Responds to Potential Disruption
Hank Jongen, the General Manager of Services Australia, has assured the public that the agency is taking measures to minimize potential disruptions to customers. Jongen emphasized that payments will not be affected, and the highest priority remains ensuring that vulnerable individuals and those with urgent queries receive the support they need.
The strike is related to a pay dispute, and it is expected that online and self-service platforms, including myGov, Centrelink, Medicare, and Child Support online accounts and mobile apps, will remain unaffected.
Pay Dispute Background
The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU), representing the Services Australia staff, has communicated their intention to engage in industrial action due to an ongoing pay dispute. CPSU National Secretary Melissa Donnelly expressed dissatisfaction with the current offer from Services Australia, which consists of a 0.7 percent increase on the proposed pay offer of 10.5 percent over three years.
Donnelly argued that given the cost-of-living pressures faced by all Australian Public Service (APS) workers, the current pay offer falls short of expectations. The CPSU has declined the pay offer and is prepared to escalate their actions to secure a more favorable pay outcome.
This strike announcement comes amidst the backdrop of a significant increase in benefits for Australian pensioners and JobSeeker recipients. Effective September 20, 2023, millions of pensioners received substantial boosts to their payments, providing some relief in the face of rising living costs across the country.
