Recently, NASA captured a unique event on the sun’s surface through the James Webb Space Telescope. Material broke away from the sun’s surface and created a tornado-like swirl around its northern pole, stumping scientists.
Unusual activity usually occurs at the sun’s 55-degree latitudes once every 11-year solar cycle, but this incident has left researchers bewildered. A prominence is a large, bright feature that extends from the sun’s surface, but other filament tear-aways have not looked like this one.
Solar physicist Scott McIntosh, from the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, stated that researchers are not sure what causes such a unique event and that there is a big question mark around it.
It’s believed to have something to do with the sun’s magnetic field, but the rest remains a mystery due to humanity’s limited view of the star. Scientists can only view the sun from the ecliptic plane, or the geometric plane that contains Earth’s orbit.
The European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter mission, which is taking photos of the sun while raising its orbit beyond the ecliptic plane, may provide answers in the future.
Solar projections, such as last year’s solar flares, have been observed fairly often. These projections can disrupt GPS systems, power grids, and radio signals, but there is no way to precisely predict how this solar vortex would affect our planet. Despite the unknowns, experts are hoping that the Solar Orbiter mission will shed some light on this phenomenon and help us better understand the sun’s atmospheric dynamics
