Rate Freeze Gives Borrowers Nationwide Relief | RBA Leaves Cash Rate at 4.1%

Relief. That was the sentiment among millions of borrowers nationwide after the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) elected to pause interest rates at its monthly meeting on Tuesday for the second consecutive month. In a move largely in line with market expectations, the RBA chose to keep the cash rate at a record 4.1 percent.

Since May last year, when the RBA began increasing interest rates, the cash rate has seen continued hikes, with the exception of April, July, and now. In under a year, the rates have ballooned over 400 basis points, the highest since 2011.

The decision of the RBA to keep the cash rate on hold will be a major source of relief for those already in debt as well as potential borrowers. However, many analysts have voiced caution over rising debt levels across the country due to the RBA’s interest rate decisions.

The RBA’s hold on interest rates does provide an opportunity for those dealing with debt issues to seek help and protect their financial future. Be it increased awareness of financial resilience or a budget review, those that are struggling are advised to seek the help of a professional as soon as possible.

Last month’s CPI figures are the reason behind the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) unexpected change of direction in one of the quickest rate increases ever seen – the cash rate jumped significantly from the previous pandemic low of 0.1 per cent.

The headline consumer price index for the most recent quarter was 6 per cent higher than the same period a year earlier, but still lower than the initial 7 per cent recorded in the March quarter, indicating that the RBA’s war against inflation is certainly making progress.
