A fascinating piece of Australian history is poised to command attention and captivate collectors’ hearts as an exceptionally rare ‘Holey Dollar’ coin, one of the first batch of currency minted in Australia, is set to go under the hammer at a Sydney auction this week.
The anticipation surrounding this rare piece is further heightened by its estimated value of $120,000.
The ‘Holey Dollar’ derives its name from its unique design. Minted in 1813, it is a coin with a distinctive circular hole punched in its center. This intricate design was a result of an innovative approach to address the scarcity of currency in the early days of the Australian colony.
According to coin specialist Jim Noble, he parted ways with the coin in 1981 when he sold it to a collector for $22,000, equivalent to approximately $100,000 in today’s currency, as reported by Yahoo.
The ‘Holey Dollar’ boasts an intriguing history centred around a coin shortage in the nascent British colony of New South Wales (NSW). In 1812, Governor Lachlan Macquarie tackled the scarcity issue by importing 40,000 Spanish reales.
To increase the number of available coins, he enlisted the expertise of William Henshall, a convicted forger, who skillfully cut out the centres of each coin, effectively doubling the available currency.
In the initial years of the New South Wales (NSW) colony, a variety of foreign coins were prevalent. British coins coexisted with Dutch guilders and ducats, Indian mohurs and rupees, as well as Portuguese johannas. The departure of many of these coins from the colony was influenced by trade interactions with visiting merchant ships.
