Aspiring homeowners in Queensland are in for a significant boost as the Palaszczuk government unveils plans to double the First Home Owner Grant, tapping into coal royalties to provide substantial financial aid. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk made the announcement on Sunday, revealing a move that is poised to make the dream of home ownership more attainable for many Queenslanders.
The First Home Owner Grant, a cornerstone of government support for those entering the property market, will now see a doubling of its financial assistance.
This initiative is expected to have a profound impact on the property landscape in Queensland, providing a timely and much-needed injection of funds for first-time buyers. With the grant set to increase, eligible first home purchasers could now receive a total of $30,000, marking a significant rise from the previous amount.
Ms. Palaszczuk stated that the augmentation would provide direct assistance to Queenslanders seeking to purchase their first home amidst the ongoing cost of living challenges.
“Our government is dedicated to alleviating these pressures by implementing the most substantial cost of living relief package in the entire nation,” she affirmed.
“I am determined to witness an upward trajectory in home ownership rates, and that is precisely why our government is taking proactive measures to extend a helping hand.”
The rise is projected to incur a cost of $210 million over the next 19 months and coincides with indications that capacity is expanding in the housing construction sector within the state.
Treasurer Cameron Dick noted that the Labour government’s “robust budget position” affords them the flexibility to “respond to evolving conditions like this, by reinvesting the returns from advancing coal royalties.”
