Qantas suffered a 30 percent turnover in its technology personnel as the airline battles staff loss, in the wake of repeated Covid-19 lockdowns.

In its half year 2022 results, the Australian airline noted employee engagement is an ongoing task within its three-year $1 billion Recovery Plan. However, it said movement is improving in line with its strategy.

CEO Alan Joyce said during a media briefing Qantas employee retention “does vary in some of the management positions”.

“Prior to Covid-19, we were [number] one or two of Australia’s preferred employers.” We came out on top in every study, and you can imagine that with employees standing down, the uncertainty around aviation, and a couple of years of large losses, we’ve dropped well down the list.

“As a result, we’re having to do all we can to keep our employees.”

Joyce stated that the corporation had “retention incentives in place to assist us get through it and maintain those really essential people who are required for constructing this.”

Qantas also stated that it has increased its investment in the customer experience, with a focus on digital capabilities and the development of incentives for its Loyalty programme, including customised offers, through the Qantas Mobile App.

To assist both Qantas and Jetstar passengers, the airline enhanced contactless and self-service alternatives and gave regular updates via its digital ‘COVID assistance hub.’

Qantas reported a $245 million loss in underlying earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA), a $1.28 billion loss before tax (ULBT), and a $622 million statutory loss before tax.

The company stated that its losses during the first half were caused by Covid-19 border restrictions and lockdowns.
