Thousands of eager tourists who flock to Tasmania’s renowned hiking trails each year are facing hefty price increases, with the Tasmania Park and Wildlife Service (TWPWS) announced that new fees would be enforced from July 1st.
The popular Overland Track and Three Capes Walk, which cover some of the island’s most spectacular scenery, will now cost over $85-100. It’s a shock that many aren’t prepared for, but has been met with a mostly positive response from the tourist industry.
It’s estimated that more than 15,000 people embark on the treks annually, many eager to be part of the heritage and experience the beauty that these routes encompass.
The Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service plans to increase prices in order to guarantee that the hiking destinations in the area remain top-notch for years to come, as stated in a statement.
“Careful consideration of the new fees was given to guarantee equitable value for money and to uphold investment into Tasmania’s distinctive tourism activities,” Tasmania PWS said.
“The revenue gained from the fees will be reallocated to preserve the current tracks and infrastructure, allowing PWS to keep the quality experiences it provides in the difficult conditions of high maintenance expenses in isolated areas.”
