Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has promised to revive the struggling public housing sector in Victoria, and across Australia, with a massive $2 billion investment in new social housing projects. The scheme was announced alongside Premier Dan Andrews in what is seen as one of the federal government’s biggest moves to date to tackle the growing problem of housing insecurity in the country.
The Social Housing Accelerator will see Victoria receive a quarter of the $2 billion allocated, and is designed to help thousands of people who have been left homeless or without adequate housing due to the pandemic. The funding will be used to build thousands of public housing units which are expected to create hundreds of jobs in the construction and related industries.
At a packed Victorian Labor Conference in Melbourne’s inner west on Saturday, Mr Andrews rallied for support from Labor members for the Voice, the housing crisis and women’s health reforms. After his address, Mr Albanese confirmed to the media that each state and territory would be given a baseline of $50m with the Accelerator Payment.
At Moonee Valley Racecourse, the Premier was joined by Mr Albanese and addressed the crowd. In his speech, Mr Albanese referred to the Liberal Party as a doomsday cult.
After delivering his speech, Mr. Albanese revealed the Federal Government’s $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator, which is set to provide thousands of social housing dwellings all over the nation. He also urged broad support for the Voice, deeply criticizing the Liberal Party for using the Referendum to incite disagreement.
