Platypus Returns to Australian National Park After 50 years

In a significant conservation project, the platypus, a unique species found only in Australia, has been reintroduced to the country’s oldest national park, located just south of Sydney. This marks the platypus’s comeback after disappearing from the area more than half a century ago.

Recognized for its distinctive bill, webbed feet, and venomous spurs, the platypus is one of only two egg-laying mammals in the world. It primarily resides in water during the nighttime.

Due to its elusive nature and specific habitat requirements, most Australians have never witnessed a platypus in the wild.

The relocation effort is a collaborative endeavor involving the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Taronga Conservation Society Australia, WWF-Australia, and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.

On Friday, four female platypuses were released into the Royal National Park, established in 1879 and the second oldest national park globally.

No confirmed platypus sightings have been reported in the park, situated around 35 kilometers (one hour’s drive) south of Sydney, since the 1970s.

The reintroduction comes at a time when the platypus faces increasing threats from habitat destruction, river degradation, feral predators, and extreme weather events like droughts and bushfires.

Estimates of the current platypus population vary widely, ranging from 30,000 to 300,000.

Gilad Bino, a researcher from UNSW’s Centre for Ecosystem Science, expressed excitement, stating, “It is very exciting for us to see platypuses come back into the park, for a thriving population here to establish themselves, and for Sydneysiders to come and enjoy this amazing animal.”

The platypuses, which inhabit Australia’s east coast and Tasmania, were collected from different locations across southeastern New South Wales and underwent various tests before being relocated.

Researchers plan to track each platypus for the next two years to gain a better understanding of how to intervene and relocate the species during droughts, bushfires, or floods.
