Palworld, the “Pokemon with guns” survival and crafting game, has taken the gaming world by storm. The game was launch on January 19th. Over the weekend, it achieved several astonishing feats:
- Soared to the top of Steam’s most-played games list, surpassing Cyberpunk 2077 with a peak concurrent player count of 1,291,967. This makes it the fifth highest peak concurrent player count in Steam history and the most-played game on the platform currently, even ahead of giants like Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG.
- Became the most-played Japanese-developed game ever on Steam, dethroning Elden Ring.
- Achieved the title of the second most-played paid game ever on Steam, only behind PUBG’s peak of 3,257,248 before it went free-to-play.
- Sold over 5 million copies in roughly three days, with a staggering 86,000 copies selling per hour. This puts it ahead of some of the fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusives, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man (3.3 million), God of War (3.1 million), and The Last of Us 2 (4 million) in their first three days.
However, Palworld’s success isn’t without its challenges. Some Pokemon fans have voiced concerns about similarities between Palworld’s “Pals” and Pokemon creatures. Additionally, the Xbox version currently lags behind the Steam version in terms of features and updates. Furthermore, the game’s massive launch has caused server strain, leading to occasional issues.
Despite these hiccups, Palworld’s undeniable success showcases the appeal of its unique blend of monster taming, survival, crafting, and gunplay. The game’s future looks bright, and it will be interesting to see how it evolves and addresses player feedback in the coming months.
