Orica, a leading explosives producer in industries such as mining, has disclosed its early adoption of Microsoft Copilot artificial intelligence software within Microsoft 365. According to the company’s 2023 annual report, Orica participated in the Copilot early adopter program, emphasizing the integration of generative AI into Microsoft Office 365 to enhance day-to-day productivity while maintaining data security through built-in engineered controls.
Beyond this, Orica is actively fortifying its internal governance in the realm of AI adoption. The company has initiated the establishment of an enterprise-wide AI Community of Practice during FY2023. This body is tasked with overseeing the introduction and operation of AI, defining procedures, standards, and principles for responsible use, and ensuring compliance with Orica’s risk tolerance, evolving regulatory frameworks, and societal expectations.
AI training remains a key focus for Orica, with plans for continued emphasis through 2024. In its financial report, Orica announced a net profit of $297.5 million on nearly $8 billion in revenue for the full year. The company’s digital solutions business, responsible for Axis Mining Technology, contributed $212 million in revenue. Looking ahead, Orica aims to integrate and optimize the businesses acquired in 2021, namely Hopper Industrial Group (HIG) and RIG Technology, including the RHINO geophysical sensor business, alongside the 2022 acquisition of Axis Mining Technology.
