Optus Chief Kelly Bayer Rosmarin Steps Down: Search for Leadership Begins

In a surprising turn of events, Optus CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin has announced her resignation, leaving a leadership vacuum at the Australian telecommunications giant. Her departure comes after overseeing two significant crises in just 13 months, raising questions about the company’s future direction.

Optus’ parent company, Singtel, wasted no time in revealing its intention to embark on a global search to find a suitable replacement for Ms Bayer Rosmarin.

The announcement of her resignation on Monday morning sent ripples through the industry, prompting speculation about the challenges that may have led to this decision.

With an illustrious career in the telecommunications sector, including stints at Commonwealth Bank and McKinsey & Company, Bayer Rosmarin brought a wealth of experience to Optus when she assumed the role in 2020. However, the recent crises may have taken a toll on her leadership.

Internal sources suggest that Gladys Berejiklian, the former premier of New South Wales, has expressed her interest in taking on the position of Chief Executive among the internal candidates. Ms. Berejiklian, who has been overseeing Optus’ business customers, assumed this executive role in early 2022.

Nonetheless, an investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) into the activities of Ms. Berejiklian’s former partner, Daryl Maguire, who was then the Member of Parliament for Wagga Wagga, revealed her involvement in serious corrupt conduct.

This revelation poses a potential risk to her candidacy, casting a shadow over her suitability for the position. It’s worth noting that Ms. Berejiklian is currently appealing the ICAC’s findings.

Within the executive hierarchy of Optus is Michael Venter, who has served as the group’s Chief Financial Officer since 2021. In the interim period while Singtel searches for a permanent replacement, Mr. Venter will step into the role of Acting Chief Executive.

Similar to Ms. Bayer Rosmarin, Mr. Venter is a former executive of Commonwealth Bank and has been at the helm of Optus during periods of robust profit results in Australia’s competitive telecommunications market.

Concurrent with the revelation of Ms. Bayer Rosmarin’s resignation, it was disclosed that Peter Kaliaropoulos has assumed the newly created role of Chief Operating Officer at Optus.

From 2003 to 2005, Mr. Kaliaropoulos held the position of Managing Director within the telco’s business division. His professional journey includes serving as the Chief Executive of the Singaporean telecommunications conglomerate StarHub and subsequently leading the Saudi Arabian arm of the Kuwaiti telecoms firm Zain Group until 2020.
