Technology powerhouse Nvidia has achieved a remarkable sales milestone, with revenues exceeding $13.5 billion (£10.6 billion) for the three months ending in June. The company’s sales more than doubled, driven by soaring demand for its artificial intelligence (AI) chips.
Notably, Nvidia anticipates sustained growth in the current quarter and has announced plans to repurchase $25 billion of its stock. This positive news propelled the company’s shares up by over 6.5% during extended trading in New York, adding to the substantial gains seen throughout the year.
In line with its upward trajectory, Nvidia foresees revenues of approximately $16 billion for the three months concluding in September. This projection surpasses Wall Street estimates, representing a remarkable 170% increase compared to the same period last year.
Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, emphasized the advent of a new computing era, stating, “A new computing era has begun. Companies worldwide are transitioning from general-purpose to accelerated computing and generative AI.”
Nvidia stock more than tripling in value
The company’s robust performance was largely fueled by its data center division, which encompasses AI chips. This segment generated revenues of more than $10.3 billion, reflecting a remarkable year-over-year increase of over 170%. Cloud computing service providers and major consumer internet companies contributed significantly to this growth by adopting Nvidia’s next-generation processors.
Nvidia’s market value surged beyond $1 trillion this year, with its stock more than tripling in value. This propelled Nvidia into the ranks of publicly traded US companies with trillion-dollar valuations, alongside industry giants like Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon.
Initially renowned for its graphics processing units tailored for computer gaming, Nvidia has strategically evolved to underpin a vast array of AI applications. A report even indicated that the company holds a dominant 95% share of the machine learning market.
This shift is demonstrated in the technology underpinning ChatGPT, a system like the one you’re interacting with, which was trained using 10,000 of Nvidia’s graphics processing units in a Microsoft supercomputer. AI products are poised to revolutionize computer usage and redefine their roles in our lives.
