Nvidia and Discord launch instant game demo

Nvidia’s GeForce Now is set for a new upgrade next month. The company, along with Discord and Epic Games, will test instant game demos directly in Discord servers. The feature allows users to play without downloading, buying, or creating an account.

At Gamescom this week, Fortnite will be the first game to try on Discord through GeForce Now. Players can click a “try a game” button, connect their Epic Games account, and start playing within seconds.

Instant Play

According to Nvidia product marketing director Andrew Fear, the demo will launch Fortnite instantly and runs as a 30-minute free trial. However, an Epic Games account is still required to access the game.

The demo is currently described as a “technology announcement.” Nvidia says developers and publishers may later adopt the feature if there is interest.

The idea is not new. Earlier services like Gaikai and Google Stadia also promised instant try-before-you-buy gameplay. Sony acquired Gaikai in 2012, but its PlayStation 4 never introduced the demos.

For now, Nvidia, Discord, and Epic Games are testing whether instant game access can finally become a reality for players.
