New Update Enables WhatsApp Users to Edit Messages within 15 Minutes

WhatsApp has announced that it will introduce a message editing feature, bringing it in line with competitors like Telegram and Signal.Users will now be able to edit their messages within 15 minutes of sending them, according to the firm.

As part of Meta, the US technology giant that also owns Facebook and Instagram, WhatsApp will roll out this feature to its 2 billion users in the coming weeks. Its largest user base is in India, with 487 million users.

In a blog post on Monday, the messaging service stated, “From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to bring you more control over your chats.” To edit a sent message, users can long-press on it and choose ‘Edit’ from the menu within the 15-minute timeframe.

To ensure transparency, edited messages will be labeled as “edited” so that recipients are aware of the modification. However, the specific changes made to the message will not be visible.WhatsApp follows in the footsteps of messaging services like Telegram and Signal, which already offer the message editing feature.

Facebook, the parent company of WhatsApp, introduced this function almost a decade ago on its social media platform. Edited updates on Facebook are marked accordingly, and a history of edits is accessible to users.

In a similar vein, Twitter, the social media platform led by Elon Musk, allows its paying subscribers to edit their tweets. Tweets can be edited within 30 minutes of posting, reducing the stress and enhancing participation in conversations, as stated in a previous blog post by Twitter.

WhatsApp’s move to introduce message editing reflects the trend of empowering users to have more control and flexibility in their online interactions.
