Netflix is cracking down on password sharing in Australia

Global Youth Voice

Netflix has expanded its efforts to crack down on password sharing in over 100 countries, including the United States. Users are now being alerted that sharing their accounts outside of their households is not allowed.

As a leading streaming video platform, Netflix has been exploring new avenues to generate revenue as the market becomes more saturated. In addition to implementing measures to limit password borrowing, the company has introduced an ad-supported option.

Netflix has started sending emails to customers in 103 countries and territories, including major markets like the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil. These emails emphasize that a Netflix account should only be used within a single household. However, paying customers have the option to add members outside of their homes for an additional fee. Furthermore, account holders can transfer a person’s profile to maintain viewing history and recommendations.

In the past year, Netflix had announced its intentions to curb account sharing and had been testing various approaches in select markets. The company estimated that over 100 million households had shared their login credentials with friends and family outside of their own homes.

As of the end of March, Netflix reported a global subscriber base of 232.5 million paying customers. Under the new policies, individuals within the same household can still share a Netflix account and access it on multiple devices while traveling.
