Nestlé Invests $2 Million in Water Savings Project at Gympie Factory

Nestlé Australia has allocated $2 million to implement cutting-edge technology aimed at reducing water consumption at its Gympie factory, which is renowned as the production site for Nescafé.

The new technology is expected to reduce water usage at the Gympie factory by approximately 20%, equivalent to saving 45 million liters of water per year. This saving equates to 18 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The key to these water savings lies in a state-of-the-art treatment and filtration system recently installed at the factory. This system enables the recycling of used water on-site, eliminating the need for fresh water from the town’s supply.

Steve Taljaard, Factory Manager, emphasized Nestlé’s dedication to continuous improvement and environmental efficiency at the Gympie site. He noted that coffee production consumes a significant amount of water, making water conservation a top priority.

The new treatment system captures and repurposes water used in the coffee-making process, utilizing this recycled water in the factory’s cooling towers.Previously, the factory sourced all its water from the local town supply, which was then directed to the local water treatment plant.

New Filtration reduces the factory’s dependence on local water

Mr. Taljaard explained that the new filtration system would not only save water but also benefit the local community. It reduces the factory’s dependence on local water, lessens the amount of wastewater requiring treatment by the local council, and eases the burden on local water supplies, particularly during drier seasons.

The water savings project aligns with the factory’s broader efforts to enhance its environmental performance, including:

Nestlé’s investment in this water-saving initiative underscores its commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management.
