Nestle, the world’s largest food and beverage company, has announced that its confectionary products will soon be wrapped in paper with a special vegetable-based coating. This coating, which was developed by experts at Nestle’s research and development centre in York, UK, will make the paper wrappers more durable and resistant to moisture.
The new coating will be applied to all of Nestle’s paper-based confectionary wrappers, including those for its popular KitKat and Smarties products. Nestle says the coating will not affect the taste or quality of its products.
More than two billion pieces of the brand’s packaging will be removed from its supply chain by the new recyclable wrappers.
“The transition to paper, which is now underway, will take several months to complete,” the company said in a statement.
“For Christmas 2022, a mix of both old and new wrappers can be found in Quality Street cartons, pouches, tubs, and tins.”
“The UK teams have pioneered major packaging innovations,” said Richard Watson, Business Executive Officer at Nestlé Confectionery.
“Nestlé Confectionery is reducing its use of virgin plastic by one-third and making all its packaging recyclable or reusable within the next three years, taking a leadership position on packaging sustainability in the process,” said Mr. Watson.
The move towards more sustainable packaging is in line with Nestle’s commitment to reduce its environmental impact. The company has already achieved its goal of making all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2024.
