NBN merchants under observation as the pricing model changes

NBN retailers have been cautioned regarding their response to shifts in wholesale pricing, with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) closely monitoring the situation. The ACCC has conveyed its expectations to retail service providers (RSPs) in a letter, emphasizing the need for transparency and honesty in communicating price changes and their reasons to consumers.

New pricing changes were recently approved, and Aussie Broadband was among the first to outline how these changes would impact retail services. However, political attention was drawn to the lower tier price increases, prompting the ACCC’s interest due to unexpected retail responses.

One of the primary issues at hand is the “pass-through” of pricing changes from a wholesale to a retail level. The ACCC is particularly concerned about any disparities where a reduction in wholesale pricing is not reflected in the retail prices offered to consumers.

ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey encouraged NBN customers to explore various broadband plans from different providers, emphasizing that there are substantial price variations between retailers. As providers announce their strategies for adapting to the new NBN price model, consumers are urged to shop around for the best deals.

The ACCC is also closely monitoring how retailers handle the pricing convergence between 50Mbps and 100Mbps plans under the new NBN pricing model. The model incentivizes serving some customers on higher-tier plans, charging them a flat rate at the wholesale level.

Brakey stressed that NBN retailers should not push households towards more expensive plans with higher-speed inclusions that exceed their needs. The ACCC is watchful for any advertising that may encourage NBN users to subscribe to higher-tier plans that are unnecessary for their specific requirements.

While acknowledging that some households may prefer higher-speed tiers, Brakey emphasized the importance of retailers providing clear and accurate information to help customers make informed decisions about their NBN plans.
