NBN Co is upgrading its satellite-to-fiber network

NBN Co, the Australian government-owned company responsible for the National Broadband Network, has announced plans to upgrade 10,000 premises in remote and isolated areas from satellite connections to fibre connections.

In a regulatory filing, NBN Co stated that it will be delivering network upgrades to fibre in a select number of regional and isolated communities currently served by the satellite network. This program aims to provide approximately 10,000 premises in 28 communities with the ability to connect to fibre services, offering higher speeds and lower latency compared to the existing satellite connections. The upgrades will also introduce new service levels and operational targets for these areas.

Furthermore, NBN Co is undertaking separate upgrades to transform other parts of its satellite network into fixed wireless connections. By migrating customers to more reliable access technologies, NBN Co hopes to retain customers who have been exploring alternative services like Starlink. This migration will also free up satellite capacity, enabling NBN Co to enhance services for those who will remain within the Sky Muster satellite footprint.

Overall, the initiative aims to improve internet connectivity and provide enhanced broadband services to residents in remote and isolated communities, thereby bridging the digital divide in Australia.
