National Australia Bank (NAB) has successfully decommissioned its 26-year-old Teradata environment, completing a major milestone in its data strategy. The migration involved transferring data and use cases onto NAB’s new strategic data platform named ‘Ada,’ which was officially launched just over a year ago as the “chapter two” of NAB’s data journey.
Being the oldest existing data platform for NAB, Teradata’s decommissioning process spanned two years. The migration effort included ingesting 16 data sources into Ada, transferring 456 use cases, and collaborating with hundreds of users across 12 business units.
Andrea Jackson, Executive for Data Delivery at NAB, emphasized the significance of decommissioning Teradata, stating that it represents a substantial step forward in the bank’s data strategy. Removing hundreds of users from various parts of the bank, the initiative aimed to streamline data storage and usage for reporting and analytics, reducing operational and security risks while enhancing the user experience.
Ada’s core technology stack includes components from Databricks, HVR/Fivetran, PowerBI, AWS, and Azure. The successful Teradata migration and decommissioning program mark the first large-scale effort to transition use cases onto Ada. In its inaugural year, Ada has laid the foundation for additional use cases to be migrated as part of NAB’s ongoing efforts to modernize its data and technology infrastructure.
