Databricks, a leading provider of software tools for AI systems, has announced its acquisition of MosaicML, an AI startup, in a predominantly stock deal worth approximately $1.3 billion. This strategic move reflects Databricks’ ongoing commitment to building a comprehensive ecosystem that empowers enterprises to train their own AI models.
With AI development gaining momentum across the tech industry, major players such as Google and Microsoft have been actively driving AI advancements. Moreover, venture capital investors have been pouring substantial funding into AI startups in recent months.
MosaicML specializes in developing software tools that streamline AI work, particularly the training of AI algorithms on vast amounts of data using expensive computer chips. By integrating MosaicML’s language-model platform with Databricks’ AI technology, the acquisition aims to provide enterprises with an all-in-one solution for training, fine-tuning, and utilizing AI models.
Ali Ghodsi, CEO of Databricks, emphasized that the collaboration between the two companies will make it cost-effective for organizations to train their own models, maintain control over their private data, and safeguard their intellectual property without relying on a centralized model.
Notably, Databricks has been a strong proponent of open-source models, which it believes can rival the offerings from established players like OpenAI and Google. MosaicML has contributed to the open-source community by releasing multiple pre-trained foundation models, which form the core technology behind services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Founded in 2021, MosaicML has secured $64 million in funding thus far, with investments from notable firms such as Lux Capital and DCVC. This acquisition positions Databricks to further strengthen its capabilities and drive innovation in the AI landscape.
