As the government has recently announced that Michele Bullock is to fill the role of governor, replacing Philip Lowe, many are hopeful that there will be a better stance taken on the Australian economy.
But Treasurer Jim Chalmers has warned that Australians should be wary of their expectations regarding looking for an end to interest rate hikes, as inflation continues to impact the economy.
Chalmers commented that the Reserve Bank governor’s role is bigger than a single person, even if the new governor is an experienced and well-respected name.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers stated he comprehends why individuals who are facing economic strains want to be informed about the reasons for the Reserve Bank’s interest rate decisions.
Furthermore, he added the Reserve Bank has a significant responsibility to elucidate the choices it makes. Furthermore, Chalmers informed that Labor is doing whatever it can to help the nation endure the bleak economic scenario ahead, but the government cannot disregard the potential of added rate cuts.
“Regardless of any changes in the Governor of the Reserve Bank, they will still have to explain and sometimes defend their decisions,” Dr Chalmers told ABC’s Insiders.
“Michele Bullock’s independence is an integral part of the Reserve Bank, and I’m determined not to jump the gun on any decisions she may suggest to the board. I have faith in her ability to proceed with the utmost professionalism and competence, harnessing her broad expertise and competency.”
