Here we sit down with LJ, to know a bit more about her journey as a digital marketer.

Q. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

LJ: My now partner in life and business was the one to first introduce me to the concept of entrepreneurship.

Back in 2009, when I first met Alex, he was an entrepreneur who ran and animation studio and was part of a business incubator.

I was blown away by the dedication those entrepreneurs had, and I knew something in me had changed. My ultimate goal wasn’t to find a decent full-time job, but to learn enough & work hard so one day, I can start my own business. 11 years later, with the help of Alex, we co-founded MobiWeb.

Q. How did you get started?

LJ: It was mid covid (August 2020) and Alex and I have been thinking about starting a business that can help small to medium business owners survive covid. Businesses who didn’t exist online, didn’t exist at all and we wanted to help.

So, I quit my full-time job and co-founded MobiWeb! We had no clients at the time and people thought we were crazy to start a new business mid covid, but actually that was the best decision we took.
We could afford to provide our digital marketing services for an affordable price, and we started getting clients through word of mouth and recommendations.

Q. What was your biggest startup challenge? What steps did you take to overcome it? What did you learn?

LJ: The biggest startup challenge is getting people to know you and your business. Big marketing budgets can be overwhelming especially for startups, so we had to change tactics. Showing up and networking was the main activity for us.

We made sure that anyone who knew us, knew that we started MobiWeb. I spoke to hundreds of people and going to networking events was easier with lockdowns everywhere around Victoria.
I learned that it was important to be consistent and show up! No excuses, just showing up, being consistent and learning from mistakes.

Q. What is the Most Memorable Thing You’ve Done Since you Started your Business?

LJ: Growing other businesses.

Our first ever client, was referred to us by someone I used to work with. He is a mobile mechanic that wanted enough work to expand and be able to rent a workshop. He had no website, no marketing and only got work through word of mouth which wasn’t enough.

He was sceptical and wasn’t sure this “SEO thing” would work for him. We used to talk daily on the phone to make sure he was informed and felt comfortable with what we did.

We started by verifying the Google Business Profile for him to attract local traffic while his SEO starts to deliver results. We made sure to write comprehensive blog posts to start ranking for specific keywords.
After 12 months of hard work and dedication, our client was able to rent a workshop and he consistently gets 20 – 25 calls/month!

This is why we started MobiWeb, because we want to see business grow and we want to be part of their success story!

Q. What is one book you recommend, and why?

LJ: Oh there are plenty. But I’ll probably recommend the one I’m reading (or rather listening to now) which is The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone.

The reason for that is, we all need someone to tell us the truth as is. We want someone to be blunt with their advice to us and this book is what we need! Someone to remind us why we started our business. How to work harder and that it’s OK to work as hard to succeed. Success comes to those who work hard!

Q. What are your top 3 favourite online apps, tools, or resources and what do you love about them?

  • Audible – a great source of information and with that we have no excuses not to listen and learn
  • Instagram – a great tool to market and build brand awareness
  • Tiktok – although considered for teenagers, but it’s a good channel for marketing when used right

Q. In terms of legacy, what is the mark you’d like to leave on the world?

LJ: I want to set an example to people that no matter where you are from or who you are, you can do it. With the right mindset and hard work, you will achieve goals.

I want people (at least the ones who know us lol) to think they can too, whenever they think of us.

Q. In one sentence, what’s the best advice you’d give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey?

LJ: There will be failures along the way, but don’t let that bring you down. Set your goal, be consistent & patient and work as hard as you can to achieve it.
