Here we sit down with Marc to learn a bit more about his journey as an entrepreneur.
Q. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Marc: Well, I was making the people I worked for good money and I thought… Why not put my own advice into practice to benefit my bottom line too?
Q. How did you get started?
Marc: I went to a networking event where a fellow Canadian was touting the merits of Google and speaking on how this little company (back then) was soon going to become the biggest player in global advertising. His talk on the emerging field of “Search Engine Optimisation” inspired me to quit my corporate marketing job and apply my sales copywriting skills online. The rest, as they say, is history!
Q. What was your biggest startup challenge?
Marc: Finding our first clients, having such little track record beyond our past experience working at other firms, was the biggest challenge.
Q. What is the most memorable thing you’ve done since you started your business?
Marc: We’ve assembled a skilled team of digital professionals from all over the globe. Catching up with our teammates as they go through their day is a blast as I enjoy their company and am reminded of what a privilege it is to build a business with friends.
Q. What is one book you recommend, and why?
Marc: “Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything.” Lasting positive change requires a process and this book is as close as anything I’ve read to providing the reader with a blueprint to form good habits that lead to lasting change.
Q. What are your top 3 favourite online apps, tools or resources and what do you love about them?
Marc: SEO is entirely dependent on search engines. The key to working out its secrets is research. I read many industry blogs and belong to working groups of fellow professionals who toil away on websites to find hidden gems. Needless to say, we keep our secrets closely guarded as they are earned through hard work over long periods.
Q. In terms of legacy, what is the mark you’d like to leave on the world?
Marc: In whatever activity I engage in, I like to play a positive part. If I can contribute, even if it’s just a little to a cause that brings people joy, helps them out in some way, or advances society in a positive way, then I’ve done my part.
Q. In one sentence, what’s the best advice you’d give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey?
Marc: Get out there and network. Meet people and grow your knowledge by asking questions and seeing how others do it. The easiest way to avoid mistakes is to learn from those made by others. Don’t reinvent the wheel… Improve on it!
