Long cloud outage for Oracle in Australia

Oracle is grappling with a significant and prolonged outage in its cloud services, specifically in the Australia East region, centered in Sydney. The outage has disrupted various critical services for over 12 hours as of August 30, with ongoing efforts to restore normalcy.

The outage commenced at 10:15 UTC on August 30 (8:15 PM AEST, August 30). However, Oracle initiated updates on its status page approximately an hour later, at 11:19 UTC (9:19 PM AEST). Initially, the company identified networking issues and reported disruptions in four key Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) services: block volumes, compute, ID and access management, and virtual cloud network.

Within a short span, the situation deteriorated significantly. By 11:57 UTC (9:57 PM AEST), Oracle reported that 14 services were offline, with an additional three—OCI container engine for Kubernetes, OCI vault, and Oracle functions—experiencing disruptions.

Further complications emerged, and by 13:02 UTC (11:02 PM AEST), OCI FastConnect was added to the list of disrupted services. Virtual cloud was also added to the list of offline services in the 14:14 UTC (12:14 AM AEST) update.

In the most recent update as of 22:25 UTC (8:25 AM AEST the following morning), certain operations had been partially restored. These included console access, networking, OCI block volumes, OCI FastConnect, OCI load balancing, OCI vault, OCI virtual networking, and MySQL database. However, seven services were still classified as “disrupted,” and 13 services remained offline.

Oracle’s status notice indicated progress with restoring the majority of the affected Compute infrastructure but expressed uncertainty regarding the timeframe for full recovery.

Oracle’s ongoing cloud service outage in the Australia East region has impacted a range of critical services, causing substantial disruptions for an extended period. The company is actively working on restoring services, but the timeline for a complete recovery remains uncertain. This incident underscores the importance of robust cloud infrastructure and disaster recovery measures in the modern digital landscape.
