Today, we sit down with Justine to learn more about her inspiring journey as an entrepreneur.
Q. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Justine: In the bustling streets of Johannesburg, South Africa, where dreams echoed against the cityscape, my journey began as a young entrepreneur with a spirit as resilient as the vibrant sunsets that painted the horizon. Life, however, is a journey of unpredictable twists, and destiny took a profound turn after an incident involving my mother who faced a harrowing incident held up at gunpoint. This pivotal moment became the catalyst for a major life shift, prompting my family’s relocation to Sydney, Australia, seeking a safer environment and new beginnings.
The Australian sun witnessed my growth as I navigated the currents of challenges and triumphs. Education became not just a pathway but a staircase to climb towards the stars. At 12 and a half I saved up all of my money to attend a Tony Robbins event. This was the start of my self development journey to excellence.
Armed with determination, I envisioned a future that transcended borders and challenged norms on a global scale. Graduation marked not an end but a threshold, leading me to campaign for my first job in an advertising agency—a profession that would become the symphony of my professional journey.
My career, like a well-crafted narrative, unfolded with each strategic move, propelling me into the realms of leading global firms. The experiences were not just stepping stones; they were lessons etched into the fabric of my expertise. Recognizing an uncharted gap in the market became the catalyst for my entrepreneurial spirit to soar once more.
And so, Million Dollar Branders was born—a testament to my acumen, resilience, and the unwavering belief that opportunities are often disguised as challenges. In the vast expanse of my dreams, I built an empire that not only transforms brands but also inspires those who dare to dream beyond the constraints of convention.
Q. How did you get started?
Justine: My journey into the global realms of marketing and branding is anchored in an unyielding belief in my inherent purpose to make a significant impact on the world. I was an avid reader and discovered Jim Rohn’s wisdom where he said, ‘Work full time on your job and part time on your fortune,’ I initiated this venture while working as a contractor in a prominent firm.
Fueled by an insatiable desire to fulfill my greater purpose, I invested tireless hours into my side job, seamlessly integrating it with my day job, marking the dawn of my entrepreneurial odyssey. With unwavering resolve, I replaced my entire income within a month when I signed my first client, establishing the bedrock for my branding empire and affirming my vast potential.
Propelled by an unshakeable belief in my talents and abilities at a young age coupled with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, I immersed myself in the realm of branding, conquering challenges with unwavering effort. Raised in an immigrant family that started from scratch, I was never handed anything on a silver platter, fuelling an insatiable drive within me to succeed despite the odds against me.
I saw a gap in the market for a boutique firm with the thought leadership of a global firm. When I launched MDB, I knew it was an all-or-nothing commitment, and this mindset continues to drive me forward. I always believe in being my own competition and setting the benchmark high, with myself and with clients we work with.
Q. What was your biggest startup challenge? What steps did you take to overcome it? What did you learn?
Justine: My most formidable startup challenge resembled a labyrinthine puzzle, intricate and demanding. Navigating the convoluted landscape of market uncertainties and resource constraints, I realized early on that resilience was my compass, and adaptability, my North Star. Embracing the dynamic nature of entrepreneurship, I approached setbacks not as roadblocks but as scenic detours, each presenting an opportunity to recalibrate and refine our trajectory.
To conquer this challenge, I employed a strategic blend of tenacity and strategic pivots. Networking became my secret weapon, allowing me to glean insights from industry mavens and absorb their invaluable lessons. Like a chess master contemplating moves, I meticulously analyzed each setback, discerning patterns that eventually transformed into the building blocks of success.
The lesson learned? In the unpredictable ballet of startups, agility isn’t a luxury; it’s a prerequisite for survival. Every challenge, akin to a cleverly disguised lesson, ultimately fortified my startup’s foundation. As the saying goes, “In the world of startups, adapt or become obsolete.” It’s not just a survival tactic; it’s the startup waltz, where those who dance with challenges emerge as the true entrepreneurs.
Q. What is the most memorable thing you’ve done since you started your business?
Justine: Launching my podcast has been a significant highlight in my entrepreneurial journey. The podcast serves as a platform to capture and share these perspectives with a global audience, emphasizing the importance of courage in thinking big and thinking differently in order to excel in life and business.
In navigating these conversations, I’ve come to appreciate that brilliance extends beyond intellectual prowess; it encompasses the openness to share unique thoughts. The podcast is evolving into a testament to the variety of perspectives that contribute to the intriguing landscape of the business world.
Q. What is one book you recommend, and why?
Justine: I recommend Tim Grover’s book “Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable” for its unapologetic and pragmatic approach to achieving excellence. Drawing from his experiences with legendary athletes like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, Grover provides invaluable insights into the mindset and work ethic necessary to transcend from good to great and, ultimately, to unstoppable.
This book serves as a no-nonsense guide that underscores the significance of relentless effort, unwavering commitment, and an unyielding refusal to settle for mediocrity. Grover’s firsthand accounts of world-class athletes offer authentic and actionable advice that extends beyond the realm of sports, making it applicable to anyone striving for excellence. Being a “cleaner” archetype this book resonated with me on many levels. It is inspiring.
Q. What are your top 3 favourite online apps, tools or resources and what do you love about them?
Justine: Apps or tools I would recommend? First up, Notion—the Swiss Army knife of productivity apps. It’s like having a personal assistant on steroids. Next in the arsenal is Canva—a graphic design wizard for the creatively challenged. Now, let’s talk Feedly because staying informed is non-negotiable in my world. It’s my go-to for curating a personalized news buffet. These tools are my secret weapons, and they keep me kicking ass and taking names in style. Time to level up, my friends!
Q. In terms of legacy, what is the mark you’d like to leave on the world?
Justine: When it comes to legacy, I aspire to leave an indelible mark on the world by being the catalyst that transforms dreams into reality. I want people to remember me not just for my achievements but for the tangible impact I’ve had on individuals and communities.
My legacy is woven with the threads of empowerment, inspiration, and action. I aim to be remembered as someone who ignited the spark of possibility in others, encouraging them to pursue their aspirations fearlessly. Whether it’s through mentorship, innovative projects, or a simple act of kindness, my goal is to leave a legacy that transcends personal success and resonates with the collective spirit of turning dreams into tangible achievements.
Q. In one sentence, what’s the best advice you’d give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey?
Justine: Embrace failure as a stepping stone, learn voraciously from every setback, and let resilience be the heartbeat of your entrepreneurial journey. Most importantly – be your own competition. Everyone’s journey is different.
Set your own path, be creative, and stay focused on your goals. Believe in yourself and strive to become the extraordinary version of yourself that you know you can be!
Remember that success is not measured by achieving milestones, but by the courage it takes to keep going when faced with adversity.
