IKEA Australia has made a significant move in its support of going vegan, announcing this week that they will replace their traditional hot dog with a plant-based version in all of their restaurants Australia-wide, starting 2024. The commitment to create more planet-friendly vegan meals is following an announcement in 2018 that the retail giant had debuted a vegan version of the iconic hot dog in Europe market.
As part of Ikea’s push for increased availability of sustainable vegan food in their restaurants, the new vegan hot dog will replace the classic hot dog that was first introduced to Ikea restaurants over 40 years ago. This move will now have customers down under enjoy flavourful vegan food while also enjoying some of the convenience and affordability that is synonymous with Ikea.
Following the tremendous success of Ikea’s vegan meatballs, which were launched in Australia in 2020, and other vegan options like vegan ice cream and vegan chocolate mousse, a new plant-based sausage has been added to the menu.
This veggie sausage consists of rice protein, onion, apple, salt and pepper, and is finished off with a smoky flair to mimic the classic sausage taste. The plant-based treat will be available in addition to the traditional meat-based meal.
By 2025, Ikea hopes that 50% of meals sold in Australian stores will be plant-based, and 80% of the menu will not include red meat, as part of its mission to promote climate-friendly choices for both customers and the company itself. The company has announced an accelerated rollout of vegan products to make this ambition a reality.
