In a speech at Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, Alan Fan, the head of intellectual property (IP) at Huawei Technologies, announced that the company generated $560 million in royalty revenues in 2022. Fan highlighted that Huawei’s royalty payments decreased in recent years due to a decline in handset sales, resulting in the company paying less to other IP holders.
Huawei has actively pursued patent licenses with various phone manufacturers such as Samsung and Oppo, as well as with automakers including Audi, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche, Subaru, Lamborghini, and Bentley.
The company has demonstrated its commitment to research and development (R&D), having invested $23 billion in R&D expenditures last year. With 114,000 employees, accounting for 55 percent of its workforce, dedicated to research activities.
Huawei faced challenges since 2019 when US restrictions limited its access to chipmaking tools following allegations of the company being a security risk. Huawei firmly denies these accusations and maintains its position as a trusted technology provider.
