Here we sit down with Taryn, to know a bit more about her journey as a copywriter.
Q. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Taryn: My business actually began before my passion for entrepreneurship emerged. I knew I was capable of being an entrepreneur, but it wasn’t until I ‘fell into the world of copywriting and started running the business that I knew entrepreneurship was the only path for me. I feel so deeply connected to my creativity when I work directly with clients. I’m able to work passionately on projects that inspire me and bring my client’s vision to life in my own unique way. I love being the driving force behind my business, with my skills at the forefront.
Q. How did you get started?
Taryn: Speaking of ‘falling into’ the world of copywriting — I began doing copywriting work for various local businesses and fellow entrepreneurial friends before I realised I was building something with a lot of potential. With a pinch of mentorship from those who knew the value of copywriting in the marketing world, I was able to formally establish my business and take on larger-scale projects with exciting new clients. Coral Copy has grown naturally from my passion and skills in the field of copywriting — and I think that is the key.
Q. What was your biggest startup challenge? What steps did you take to overcome it? What did you learn?
Taryn: I’ve learned that, since creativity and sparks of inspiration are the driving forces behind my best work, it is essential to rest and recharge. Creativity is not endless, and the premium quality I deliver to my clients means I need to be at my highest level of inspiration when I’m writing — and this means taking purposeful downtime when I feel less creative.
Q. What is the Most Memorable Thing You’ve Done Since you Started your Business?
Taryn: I’ve developed some incredible ongoing relationships with amazing businesses — such as beauty and clothing labels, where I’m able to be a part of each product launch through email copy, social captions, and new product descriptions. The benefits from this relationship are strengthened each time we work together, as we craft a brand that becomes really unique and successful. These partnerships are the most memorable and treasured aspect for me; there is no better feeling than when a client says, “Let’s do this again.”
Q. What is one book you recommend, and why?
Taryn: I’ve always believed that the best writers are the biggest readers. I try to read books for entertainment as much as I can because I believe the more high-quality, creative content your mind is absorbing, the better a writer you will naturally become. So, my answer to this is not self-improvement or educational book, but a collection of my favourite fictional thrillers (a not-guilty guilty pleasure): The Silent Patient and The Wife Between Us. I also love a bit of Stephen King!
Q. What are your top 3 favourite online apps, tools, or resources and what do you love about them?
Taryn: Trello is the organisational tool of my dreams. Each project, big or small, gets a card on my board, and I’m always rearranging, noting, and scheduling. My absolute favourite, though, would be Apple’s Pages app, where I spend the majority of my time (and love it).
Q. In terms of legacy, what is the mark you’d like to leave on the world?
Taryn: I don’t often consider leaving a mark on the world. I’d rather make a smaller, more personal difference. I want to leave a mark on the lives of each client I work with, as I bring to life their vision of the brand’s copy and communications. I particularly love working with founders one-on-one. I love when clients come to me saying, “I know what I want to say, but I don’t know how to say it” — and return to me with feedback such as, “You achieved my vision before I even knew what my vision was.” That is the most rewarding.
Q. In one sentence, what’s the best advice you’d give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey?
Taryn: Organisation is everything, and passion will lead to success. Don’t force creativity; work with your natural ebbs and flows. Create a healthy, positive working environment for yourself. Take pride in your work. Always deliver your best.
