Greens Warn Superannuation Changes May Fund Stage 3 Tax Cuts

The Greens have heavily criticised the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s decision to introduce higher tax rates for Australians with millions of dollars in their superannuation accounts while still going ahead with the controversial stage three tax cuts.

The party has said the decision is a betrayal of hardworking Australians and is a step towards creating an unequal and unfair tax system.

From 2025, Australians with more than $3 million in their superannuation accounts will have their concessional tax rate increased to 30 per cent, double the current rate of 15 per cent, as per the newly implemented policy.

Approximately 80,000 people will be impacted by the change, which is projected to save the budget $2bn annually.

The Greens are of the view that this would be a disincentive for high-earning individuals to save for their retirement and is a move to further burden the middle and lower-income earners.

The party has said that the government is playing politics with the tax system and that this decision will only benefit the wealthy and leave the middle and lower-income earners worse off.

Adam Bandt, the leader of the Greens, accused the government of sidestepping any talks regarding tax cuts prior to the Budget in May.

“The government is attempting to finance the third-level tax reductions for billionaires and politicians, with one of the most costly components of the forthcoming budget being greater than a quarter of a trillion dollars in $900-a-year tax cuts for billionaires and politicians,” he said.

The tax cuts of stage three, which will be implemented in July 2024 and mainly impact medium to high-income earners, are estimated to cost $254bn over a period of 10 years.

Stage three entails the elimination of the 37% marginal tax rate for individuals with an income between $120,000 and $180,000, and the implementation of a flat rate of 30% for anyone making between $45,001 and $200,000.
