Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has introduced a major breakthrough in artificial intelligence with its “Gemini” model. This advanced technology can process and understand various information formats like video, audio, and text. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the immense effort behind this project, calling it “one of the biggest science and engineering efforts” undertaken by the company.
Gemini boasts a significant improvement in reasoning and information comprehension compared to previous Google AI models. This allows it to grasp nuanced details and handle complex tasks better.
Rivaling ChatGPT
Gemini’s arrival comes after OpenAI’s ChatGPT gained significant traction in the past year. Google is aiming to compete with this Microsoft-backed technology. A portion of Gemini’s technology has already been integrated into Google’s AI assistant, Bard. The company plans to release the full version of Gemini through Bard in early 2024.
Alphabet will offer three versions of Gemini, catered to varying processing power requirements. The most powerful version is designed for data centers, while the smallest is optimized for mobile devices.
Cost-effective and efficient
Despite being the largest AI model built by DeepMind, Gemini is significantly cheaper to operate than its predecessors. This efficiency makes it accessible to a wider range of users.Alongside Gemini, Alphabet unveiled a new generation of AI chips called the Cloud TPU v5p. These chips are specifically designed to train large AI models and offer a significant performance boost compared to previous generations.
The new chips are currently available in “preview” for developers, allowing them to explore the possibilities of this advanced technologyGoogle’s new Gemini model represents a significant leap forward in AI capabilities, offering improved reasoning, information processing, and cost-efficiency. This technology has the potential to impact various fields and accelerate the development of AI applications across the board.
