Google Faces Copyright Lawsuit from Danish Rival Jobindex

Alphabet’s Google is facing a lawsuit in Denmark from online job-search platform Jobindex. Filed by the Danish Media Association on behalf of Jobindex, the lawsuit alleges copyright violations by Google, accusing the tech giant of copying job advertisements without permission. Here are the key details of the case:

Jobindex claims that Google copied job ads from its platform to use on Google for Jobs without authorization, constituting copyright infringement.

Competing on Equal Terms

Jobindex CEO Kaare Danielsen emphasized the importance of fair competition, stating that they are willing to compete with Google but only on equal terms. They argue that Google should not be allowed to use content that doesn’t belong to them.

This lawsuit is the first of its kind in Denmark since the implementation of new EU copyright rules in 2021. These rules require online platforms to take legal responsibility for any user-uploaded content and protect copyright holders.

Jobindex is seeking compensation and damages for copyright violations, making it clear that they have not used Google’s tools to flag copyrighted content.

Creating Fair Competition

Jobindex’s legal action aims to level the playing field in the Danish job-search market. The lawsuit may set a precedent for other Big Tech companies facing similar copyright-related challenges in the EU.

A Google spokesperson defended the company, emphasizing that its job search service is entirely voluntary. They noted that no job provider is included in Google’s Jobs function unless they choose to participate.

This lawsuit reflects ongoing concerns about fair competition and copyright issues involving tech giants like Google. Its outcome could have implications for similar cases across the EU.
