Google agreed to destroy browsing data to settle consumer privacy lawsuit

Google has agreed to destroy billions of data records to settle a lawsuit and resolve the problem of privacy. According to the lawsuit against Google, the company was involved in a privacy violation. Some people showed concern over privacy and what they do online. They said that Google was secretly watching what they do online, even when they thought they were browsing privately.

The terms of the settlement were filed in Oakland, california.  The lawyers suing Google think the deal is worth over $5 billion, maybe even up to $7.8 billion. But Google won’t have to pay any money to the users directly. However, individuals can still sue Google for damages if they want.

This legal case started in 2020 and involves millions of Google users who used private browsing since June 2016. These users claimed that Google’s tools let it track them, even when they thought they were browsing privately.

As part of the deal, Google will update what it tells people about what it collects during private browsing. It will also let people using Incognito mode block third-party cookies for five years.

Google’s spokesperson, Jose Castaneda, said they’re happy to settle the lawsuit, which they always thought was unfair. He said Google never connects data to individual users when they use Incognito mode, and they’re willing to delete old technical data not linked to individuals.

The lawyers for the people suing Google see this settlement as a big step in making tech companies more honest. A preliminary deal was made in December to avoid a trial set for February 5, 2024. The details of the settlement weren’t shared at that time, but the lawyers plan to ask Google to pay their legal fees later on.
