Goodman Group has initiated the planning process anew for a substantial data centre site located within the Cumberland council area in Sydney.Project Pluto is envisioned as a three-story structure, with each level boasting a capacity of 42MW. The project’s estimated value stands at approximately $2.5 billion.
This initiative heralds the launch of Project Pluto, a formidable 126MW facility, replacing a prior approval process. A Goodman Group spokesperson informed iTnews that the data centre is specifically tailored to meet the immediate requirements of cloud operators and emerging market players.
Spanning across 70,000 square meters, the site is slated to accommodate a 37,000 square meter building, inclusive of office spaces. Notably, over 30 percent of the site is earmarked for landscaping, as indicated in Goodman Group’s request for the government to issue secretary’s environmental assessment requirements (SEARs) for the project.
According to the SEARs request, the plan encompasses 18 data halls, each housing 600 racks, with a rack density approaching 12kW per rack.
Goodman Group affirmed to iTnews that the site possesses favorable attributes for a data center, including its close proximity to significant electricity infrastructure, notably an Ausgrid facility situated opposite.
Currently, the site is occupied by Castrol Australia, utilizing it as a lubricants facility.
This development adds to the burgeoning presence of data centers in Sydney’s outer metro regions. Noteworthy projects include Goodman Group’s $1.4 billion endeavor in Gore Hill, Macquarie Technology Group’s approval for its IC3 SuperWest build, and Arup’s pursuit of planning approval for a $450 million project believed to be associated with AWS.
