Five data breaches in Australia affected 1 million or more persons

According to the latest numbers from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, five data breaches occurred in the second half of 2022, affecting at least one million persons (OAIC).

As revealed yesterday, some OAIC breach data became public ahead of the report’s release due to a freedom of information request.

Between July and December 2022, there were 497 notifiable data breaches reported, a 26 percent increase over the first half of the year.

According to the report, five breaches affected over one million people.

Optus (almost 2 million people), Woolworths MyDeal (2.2 million), and Medibank are three well-known breaches (9.7 million).

Nevertheless, the identities of the other two breach victims with significant customer damage are unknown.

The report noted that 350 breaches were the result of “malicous or criminal attacks”, a rise of 41 percent over the previous half; while human error breaches fell five percent to 123 notifications.
