Federal Government on Track to Deliver First Surplus in Over a Decade: Tax Revenue Soars

The federal government has received a timely boost of confidence that their promise of delivering the first surplus in more than a decade is on track to become a reality, after soaring tax revenue has swelled the budget bottom line.

In the latest budget figures released by the Finance Department on Friday, it showed that the budget was sitting at a surplus of $19bn when at the end of May, a huge improvement on the original forecast for 2022-23 of $4.2bn.

The majority of the boost has been attributed to the red hot housing market that has potential buyers extending further and further into their pockets, increasing the influx of stamp duty revenue that forms a significant portion of the budget bottom line.

At the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Anthony Albanese praised the result as an outstanding accomplishment given the Morrison government had projected a $78bn budget deficit.

“An extraordinary accomplishment, indeed, the turnaround from a projected $78 billion deficit to a surplus of more than $4.2 billion which was anticipated last month has enabled us to stay on track of delivering Australia’s first budget surplus in 15 years, despite the exorbitant $1 trillion of debt left by the preceding government,” he said.

Jim Chalmers, the Treasurer, asserted this week that the surplus was significantly larger than predicted in the May budget.

He declined to state the amount, however, he mentioned that it would surpass expectations. Evidently, due to a secure job market, income tax had raised immensely by $8.5bn, moreover, disbursements to May were $2bn lower than what was anticipated.
