Federal Government considers wealth-based adjustments for aged care costs

The federal government of Australia has released the final report for aged care containing 23 recommendations. These recommendations are made to have a more sustainable system. According to the reports, there will not be any new tax to cover the costs of aged care. However, the cost will be covered through wealthy people who use these services.

The wealthy people could end up paying more for aged care services than their counterparts or those who are less-off. The recommendations in the report are made amid the increasing wealth of many older people, while declining in the working age.

The taskforce endorses the government’s pivotal role in funding aged care but opposes any particular tax rate hikes to bolster future aged care financing. They highlight significant concerns regarding intergenerational fairness when a diminishing proportion of the working-age population is expected to finance these services.

Additionally, they note that superannuation is intended to empower individuals to accumulate wealth and cover retirement-related expenses, including those for aged care.
