Facebook aims to recruit 10,000 workers in the European Union over the next five years and helped develop the so-called metaverse, a fledgling online world where people dwell and communicate in shared virtual areas. It would be a big step forward for the firm, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasized in recent months.
In November, Facebook contributed $50 million (A$67 million) to the development of the metaverse, in which firms like Roblox and “Fortnite” creator Epic Games have a strong presence. Earlier, the business developed a new digitized remote office program in which customers of its Oculus Quest 2 headsets could make appointments as virtual copies of themselves.
Facebook also announced in July that it was forming a product team that works on the metaverse as part of Facebook Reality Labs, its an immersive virtual reality and virtual reality division. “This investment reflects our trust in the robustness of the European technology sector and the promise of European tech talent,” the business stated.
