Here we sit down with Gena, to know a bit more about her journey as an entrepreneur.
Q. Tell us a little more about your journey as an entrepreneur – how did you get started? What inspired you?
Gena: My journey began out of creative necessity and a desire. With the pandemic bringing its challenges, I was in a position where I was a stay-at-home mum desiring more purpose and a goal to become financially independent.
My turning point was a life-changing event that forced me to take an honest, deep look into myself and how I want to consciously create my life vision. I had been doing human design readings for family and friends and saw how much it benefited them.
This propelled me to take the leap to follow my passion for learning about our purpose and how we operate in our unique way in the world and turn it into a business, to support women, who are on the same quest within themselves.
Q. What’s one thing in your routine that you do consistently that has made a huge difference in your personal or business life?
Gena: My morning routine is my lifeline. Every morning I take a few conscious deep breaths, choose one of my essential oils to step into the morning with, stretch my body and once my kids are settled with breakfast, I journal my business and home goals for the day.
This sets the tone for my day, it gives me focus and direction and takes the pressure off overloading my to-do list. Prior to implementing this, I found myself floundering about with a gigantic mental to-do list, that never ended and would rush into the day to try to get absolutely everything done. This routine has enabled me to be more deliberate and allows me to become energetically ready for both mum and business life. As a mum in business, simple routines like this are powerful and can fit into any part of the day.
Q. Who are your mentors and inspiration? and what knowledge or insight did they give to you that was valuable?
Gena: I draw daily inspiration from my children, particularly my eldest. She teaches me every day how to become more innovative in my thinking and become more aware and mindful of my communication style.
My first inspiration in my business was author Jen Sincero. I have listened to her audiobook, You are Badass, multiple times. It was this book that sparked me into following more of what lights me up and is kind to my mind. My first coach Adriana taught me to keep it simple. With a stream of ideas coming to me all the time, I can get caught up in wanting to do it all! My current mentor, Samantha J, inspires, educates, and elevates me consistently in her business school.
She has inspired me to transition out of a small thinking mindset and to embody and own the value of who I am in my fullest expression. Lastly, the woman I have learnt the most from is my mother. She has taught me how to stand in my strength; to keep going when I feel like giving up; and have firm, healthy boundaries.
Q. What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Gena: The thing that satisfies me most in my business is the connections I get to make. That’s what I love about this, is I get to connect with women all over the world. Every time I meet someone new and have conversations that light us both up it is such a huge YES in my soul!
Q. How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?
Gena: My two most successful marketing strategies to date have been strong client relationships via my Instagram content and conversations sparked by my interactive stories and word of mouth. My business is founded on cultivating relationships with my clients, that is where my focus, time, and energy goes- into them.
Q. What have been your biggest failures or challenges?
Gena: My biggest challenge has been moving through the obstacles of comparison, imposter syndrome, and self-doubt. As an emerging entrepreneur, it can be overwhelming at times with the plethora of mentors and coaches out there.
It can be easy to fall into the trap of trying to follow in their footsteps, doing things that don’t really align with who you are, or drowning in comparison that fuels self-doubt. It results in offers that don’t bring joy and ends in resentment towards the very thing you set out to do. Standing on my own and finding my unique voice has been quite the journey, but one that has been necessary.
Q. How did this failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?
Gena: What I learned from my failures was that in order for me to succeed and step towards my big bright beautiful life vision, I needed to bring all of me to the table. This in itself was a successful moment.
Giving myself permission to be me, just like I give my clients permission to fully be themselves, makes my business a place of joy and growth.
I thank my imposter and self-doubt because, without these, I wouldn’t know how to stand more in the integrity of who I am as a mentor, as a mother, and as a woman. I wouldn’t have done the inner work required to believe in the entirety of who I am and what I have to offer to the world.
Q. If someone was to create a TV show about you, what would it be about and what would it be called?
Gena: I love this question! It would be a witty dramedy of a mother who keeps getting thrown challenges to overcome along with her adventurous children.
She has her posse of Angels and Fairies who help her discover her magic and learns to use it to make their world a better place.
A combination of The Grimm meets Will and Grace meets Lucifer meets Friends. It would be called “Genouaz”.
