Europol has expressed concerns about the potential misuse of the artificial intelligence-powered chatbot ChatGPT, warning that it could be exploited for phishing attempts, disinformation, and cybercrime.
ChatGPT, backed by Microsoft’s OpenAI, has become a popular tool since its release last year, leading to rival products and companies integrating similar technologies into their apps and products.
Europol has highlighted the use of ChatGPT in three areas of crime: phishing, propaganda, and disinformation. Criminals can use ChatGPT to target victims by reproducing the style of speech of specific individuals or groups, generating and spreading messages with little effort, and even producing malicious code without technical knowledge.
The EU enforcement agency has presented its first tech report, emphasizing the potential for large language models like ChatGPT to be exploited by criminals, calling for greater vigilance in regulating AI technology.
