In order to cover upgrading work on its fixed wireless network and to bolster the supply of relevant transport infrastructure, NBN Co. and Ericsson have extended their decade-long cooperation.
In a statement, Ericsson said that it had accepted the contract “extension” to enhance the fixed wireless network of NBN Co with 4G and mmWave technology.
The renovations, which will cost a total of $750 million, were revealed earlier this year, with $480 million of the cost coming from the government.
“The enhanced capacity and reach of the upgraded network will allow up to 120,000 homes and businesses in NBN Co’s satellite footprint access to fixed wireless for the first time,” Ericsson added. The existing footprint, which covers about 650,000 premises, will also receive enhancements.
With the extension, Ericsson also becomes “the only supplier of 4G and 5G radio access and microwave transport technologies” to NBN Co., which is a significant move.
It was known that the network operator had previously used equipment from other manufacturers for its microwave links.
In terms of radio gear, Ericsson stated that it would use “the most recent Massive MIMO solutions, as well as 4G and 5G antenna-integrated.
The latest RAN Processor for 4G and 5G, as well as Mini-Link microwave transport solutions, such as dual carrier solutions in traditional frequency bands, all outdoor E-band, and long-haul, are also being deployed, according to the vendor.
According to the supplier, Ericsson’s technology will enable NBN Co to double the tower network’s range from 14 km to 29 km.
Executive general manager for fixed wireless and satellite at NBN Co. Jason Ashton said, “Investing in 5G mmWave is a part of our commitment to upgrade the NBN fixed wireless network for future needs and consistently enhance customer experience.”
“We are committed to maximising the performance of both our fixed wireless and satellite networks, and our partnership with Ericsson will help us extend the capabilities of technology to the advantage of the more than 1 million homes and businesses covered by these networks throughout Australia.”
